HCTZ is a diuretic that is taken by people to reduce hypertension. HCTZ medication should never be taken with prescription drugs heartbeat; the combination can lead to low levels of potassium. OTC decongestants taken with HCTZ can inhibit the functioning of HCTZ, causing an increase in blood pressure. Foods containing glycyrrhizin should also be avoided because they can have the same effects as decongestants.

Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs that are taken by over 20 million people in the United States. A side effect of some statins is muscle pain can be aggravated by certain prescription medications. In fact, the use of statins with a prescripton yeast infection or oral antifungal medications can cause muscle fibers to break. Combination of drugs may also impair renal function so severely that the kidneys may stop. B vitamins or grapefruit juice taken in combination with statins may have the same effect on the kidneys.

Warfarin is given to people to prevent blood clots in the blood vessels medication. People who have had a heart attack, stroke or have dentures are prescribed warfarin. The drug should not be taken with SSRIs, erythromycin, antifunglas, ciprofloxacin, omeprazole, amiodarone or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Taking warfarin with these drugs can cause the metabolism of warfarin to be affected, increasing its anticoagulant properties.
